Chapter 15
Etiquette of Greeting in Islam
1. Hadrat Abu Umamah Sudayy bin ‘Ajlan al-Bahili (ر ) relates that Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (ص ) said, “The person closest to Allah is one who precedes others in greeting”. (Abu Dawud)
2. Hadrat ‘AbdAllah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘Aas (ر ) said that a man asked Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (ص ), ‘What in Islam is the best?’ He answered, “To feed people and to greet everyone (by saying: Assalamu ‘alaykum: peace be upon you) whether you know the person or not”. (Bukhari and Muslim)
3. Hadrat Baraa’ (ر ) relates that Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (ص ) said, “When two Muslims meet and shake hands, they are forgiven their sins before they part”. (Abu Dawud)
4. Hadrat Abu Hurayrah (ر ) relates that Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (ص ) said, “A rider should greet a pedestrian, a pedestrian should greet one who is sitting, and a small group should greet a larger group”. (Bukhari and Muslim)
5. Sayyidatina ‘Aisha (ر ) relates, ‘Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (ص ) said to me, “This is Jibril. He greets you with Salam (the salutation of peace)”. She said, ‘I replied: Wa ‘Alaihis-salam-u wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu’. (Peace be upon him and the mercy of Allah and His blessings). (Bukhari and Muslim)
6. Hadrat ‘AbdAllah ibn ‘Abbas (ر ) relates that Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (ص ) once passed by some graves in Madina. Facing towards them, he said, “Peace by on you, O dwellers of the graves! May Allah forgive us and you. You have preceded us, and we will follow you”. (Tirmidhi)
