HADITH: SAYINGS OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD
may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him
Chapter 17
Importance of work in Islam
1. Hadrat Abu Hurayrah (ر ) related that the Holy Prophet (ص ) said, “All Prophets appointed by Allah have had the profession of grazing goats”. He was asked by his Companions, ‘And even you?’ He answered, “Yes, I too grazed them on wages of some Qirat for the people of Makkah”. (Bukhari)
2. Hadrat Abu Hurayrah (ر ) related that the Holy Prophet (ص ) said, “Prophet Dawud, peace be upon him, (earned his living and) fed himself only from his earnings through his labour”. (Bukhari)
3. Hadrat Abu Hurayrah (ر ) related that Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (ص ) said, “It is better for any one of you to carry a bundle of fire-wood on his back (and sell it), than asking (begging) from someone, whether he gives him or refuses”. (Bukhari and Muslim)
4. Hadrat ‘Abdullah ibn Umar (ر ) related that Allah’s Prophetic Messenger (ص ) was once delivering a sermon from the pulpit on alms giving and abstaining from begging and said, “The upper hand is better that the lower. The upper hand is the one that gives and the lower hand is the one that begs”. (Bukhari and Muslim)
