HADITH: SAYINGS OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD
may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him

Chapter 3

Salah (Prayer)

1.   Hadrat Abu ‘Abdul Rahman ‘Abdallah bin Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) ‘Which action is loved most by Allah?’ He answered, “Performing the Salah (Prayers) in time”. I asked, ‘Thereafter?’ He said, “Good treatment of parents”.  I asked again, ‘Then which next?’ He said, “Fighting in the path of Allah”. (al-Bukhari and Muslim)

2.   Hadrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “(Performing) the five daily Prayers is like bathing five times a day in a flowing river which runs in front of your door (thoroughly cleansing you)”.  (Muslim)

3.   Hadrat Abu Thurayyah Sabrah ibn Ma‘bad Al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Teach a child to pray Salah (five times daily Prayers) at the age of seven years and punish him for any failure to perform Salah at the age of ten years”. (Abu-Dawud and Tirmidhi)

4.   Hadrat Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The Performing of five daily Prayers, Friday Prayers from one Friday to another and fasting from one month of Ramadan to another make amends for minor sins in-between these periods provided no major sins are committed”. (Some examples of major sins are murder, theft and adultery.) (Muslim)

5.   Hadrat Abul Yaqdhan ‘Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) related: ‘I heard the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) say, “A longer duration in Prayer (Salah) and the conciseness of the sermon of a person prove his intelligence and wisdom. Therefore let your Prayer be long and your sermon brief”. (Muslim)
