INTRODUCTION
In the Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful.
All Praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds and may He shower His choicest blessings on His beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam. Amin.
We thank Allah, The Glorified and The Exalted, for bestowing upon us the opportunity to publish this first book under the banner of Iqra Publications. Al-Hamdu Lillah, Iqra: The Islamic Journal is now firmly established as a quarterly publication. Having gained in experience, we have now decided to publish at least one Islamic Religious Education book each year to supplement the efforts of fellow Muslims in this field. And what better topic to start with than the Sayings of Prophet Muhammad, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him.
This is the first time that a book of Hadith has been translated into both English and Kiswahili. With Islamic Religious Education (IRE) becoming a compulsory subject in Primary and Secondary schools in Kenya, this book can be used as a text in schools, as learning the Sayings of the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam is part of the syllabus of IRE. For this reason, the selected Hadith or Sayings have been arranged topic-wise in keeping with the syllabus. Furthermore, short Hadiths that are easily memorized by students have been selected so that the book can prove beneficial, not only in schools but also in madrasas. Finally, the book can be considered essential reading not only for Muslim children but also for adults, as Islamic teaching is based on both the Qur’an which is the Word of Allah, as well as the Hadith, which are the Sayings of the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam.
These Hadiths have been selected from Imam an-Nawawi’s Riyad us Salihin which needs no introduction to Muslims as it is used in learning circles in masajid and religious institutions the world over.
The Kiswahili translation has been done Lillah (for the sake of Allah) by Shaykh Harith Swaleh. May Allah reward him for this noble deed, Amin. When one goes through the Kiswahili translation, one cannot fail to glean from it the piety of this sincere worker for Islam and his immense love for the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam. He has taken great pains to make sure that the Hadiths are translated as accurately as possible. If the Hadith starts in the negative, he has stuck to the negative, he has paid particular attention to use of gender, and he has tried to make absolutely sure that not one word from the original is missed out in the translation. He has also used very high standard Kiswahili in keeping with standards of such a book.
The English translation was prepared after consulting various existing translations.
This book is priced well below cost so that everyone can afford it. This has been made possible as a result of generous donations from committed Muslims. May Allah reward them for their service to the cause of Islam. Amin.
May Allah reward all those who have helped in the production of this book. Amin. All the work of Iqra Publications is carried out on a voluntary basis.
Finally, our request to all readers is to handle this religious book with due respect.
May Allah, The Glorified and The Exalted, accept us as servants in His cause, and keep us in the company of the Truthful, the Martyrs and the Pious, Amin.

1408 H, 1988Note: The plural of Hadith (Saying) is Ahaadith but the word Hadith is used here throughout for both singular and plural as it is most commonly used and understood by a very large majority of Muslims while the word Ahaadith is not generally used.
