Qur’an and Hadith on Isra’ and Mi‘raj

The miracle of Isra’ (the Night Journey) of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) has been narrated in this verse of the Holy Qur’an.

Glorified is He Who carried His bondman on a journey by night from the Sacred Masjid (in Makka) to Masjid al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem) whose precincts We have blessed, so that We might show him of Our Signs. Surely, He is The All-Hearing, The All-Seeing. (17:1)

The miracle of Mi‘raj (Heavenly Ascension) has been narrated in these verses of the Holy Qur’an.

Then he drew near, then he came closer.
Till he was (at a distance of) two bows’ length or even nearer (qaba qawsayni aw adna)
Now He revealed to His bondman whatever He revealed.
The heart (of the Prophet) lied not in what he saw.
Will you then dispute with him concerning what he saw?
And indeed he saw him in another descent.
By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary (over the seventh heaven).
Near to which is the Paradise of Abode. (Jannatul Ma’wa)
When that which covers did cover the lote-tree.
The sight (of the Prophet) turned not aside nor exceeded the limit.
Certainly, he (the Prophet) saw of the greatest Signs of his Lord. (53:8-18)

We learn from the following Hadith that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) went on Mi‘raj with Archangel Hadrat Jibril (‘Alayhissalam). This is the beginning part of a much bigger Hadith.

Narrated Hadrat Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (Rady Allahu ‘Anhu) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) said: While I was at Makka, the roof of my house was opened and Jibril descended, opened my chest, and washed it with zam-zam water. Then he brought a golden tray full of wisdom and faith and having poured its contents into my chest, he closed it. Then he took my hand and ascended with me to the nearest heaven. When I reached the nearest heaven, Jibril said to the gatekeeper of the heaven. Open (the gate). The gatekeeper asked: Who is it? Jibril answered: Jibril. He asked: Is there anyone with you? Jibril replied: Yes, Muhammad is with me. He asked: Has he been called?  Jibril said: Yes.

So the gate was opened and we went over the nearest heaven and there we saw a man sitting with some people on his right and some people on his left. When he looked towards his right, he laughed and when he looked towards his left, he wept.

Then he said: Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious son. I asked Jibril: Who is he? He replied: He is Adam (peace be upon him) and the people on his right and left are the people of his offsprings. Those on his right are the people of Paradise and those on his left are the people of hell and when he looks towards his right he laughs and when he looks towards his left he weeps.

Then he ascended with me till he reached the second heaven and he said to its gatekeeper: Open (the gate). The gatekeeper said to him the same as the gatekeeper of the first heaven had said and he opened the gate. (al-Bukhari and Muslim)

In another Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, it has been reported by Hadrat Malik bin Sa‘sa‘ah (Rady Allahu ‘Anhu) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) met the Prophets, peace be upon them, on various heavens as follows:

on the first heaven: Nabi Adam,
on the second heaven: Nabi Yahya and Nabi ‘Isa,
on the third heaven: Nabi Yusuf,
on the fourth heaven: Nabi Idris,
on the fifth heaven: Nabi Harun,
on the sixth heaven: Nabi Musa,
on the seventh heaven: Nabi Ibrahim,
peace be upon them all.

Muslims love all the Prophets sent by Allah, and Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) realized that we would be interested to know how they looked like so he has described them for us. For example, in the following Hadith, we find the description of Nabi Musa and Nabi ‘Isa (peace be upon them).

Hadrat ‘AbdAllah ibn ‘Abbas (Rady Allahu ‘Anhu) reported that Rasulullah (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) said: On the night of my Night Journey, I passed by (Nabi) Musa (‘Alayhissalam), a man light brown in complexion, tall, well-built, as if he was one of the men of the Shanu’a, and saw (Nabi) ‘Isa ibn Maryam (‘Alayhissalam) as a man of medium stature with white and red complexion, and crisp hair, and I was shown Malik, the guardian of hell-fire, and Dajjal (the anti-Christ) among the signs shown to me by Allah. (Muslim)

Our Beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) also saw the river of al-Kawthar which Allah has bestowed upon him as we learn from the following Hadith.

Hadrat Anas bin Malik (Rady Allahu ‘Anhu) reported that Rasulullah (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) said: While I was traveling in Paradise, I came to a river whose banks were domes of pearls, and when I asked Jibril (‘Alayhissalam) what this was, he replied that it was al-Kawthar which my Lord had given me. Its soil was the most excellent musk. (al-Bukhari)

Sallu ‘ala’r Rasul

Invoke (Allah’s) blessings on Prophet Muhammad
May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him.
