Allah Makes Obligatory the Daily Prayers on the night of Mi‘raj

When Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) was in Hadratillah (Presence of Allah) on his Mi‘raj (Heavenly Ascension), Allah (The Glorified and The Exalted) honoured him and his Ummah (Community of Muslim believers) by prescribing fifty times daily Prayers.

Allahu Akbar! Allah is Supremely Great!

When he descended with this gift from Allah, he met Nabi Musa (‘Alayhissalam) in heaven who asked him what he had received from Allah. Our Beloved Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) proudly replied: fifty times daily Prayers (Salah)! Nabi Musa (‘Alayhissalam) advised him to return to Allah and request Him to reduce them as his experience with his Ummah (community) was that they could not fulfil the Commandment of praying even two times a day.

So our Beloved Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) returned and Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta‘ala) reduced the Prayers by five. When he returned, our Beloved Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) again met Nabi Musa (‘Alayhissalam) and informed him that the number of Prayers had been reduced by five. Nabi Musa (‘Alayhissalam) again advised him to return to Allah and request Him to reduce them. Our Beloved Prophet kept on returning to Allah on the advice of Nabi Musa many times until the number of daily obligatory Prayers were reduced to five.

Even after that, Nabi Musa told him to return to Allah, but our Beloved Prophet said that he was now too shy to return. Then Allah gave His Command that whoever prays five times a day will be rewarded for fifty times Prayer, as per His Decree that every good deed is rewarded ten times!

Allahu Akbar! Allah is Supremely Great!

Imam al-Barzanji, has explained about the mystery of these meetings of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) with Nabi Musa (‘Alayhissalam) in his Qissa al-Mi‘raj which is a fourteen chapter detailed narration in poetic prose about the miracle of the Prophet’s Heavenly Ascension. He quotes two verses of a qasida (religious poem) which say that Nabi Musa advised Prophet Muhammad to return to Allah again and again because every time he returned, Prophet Muhammad was full of the Nur (Sacred Light) of Allah, and Nabi Musa wanted to behold that Nur again and again.

Sallu ‘alal Habib.
Allahumma salli wa sallim ‘alayh

Invoke (Allah’s) blessings on the Beloved (Prophet)
May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him.

Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta‘ala) talked with Nabi Musa (‘Alayhissalam) on Tur Sinin (Mount Sinai) and He talked with Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) when He called him for Mi‘raj. Allah’s speech is unlike human speech. As Shaykh Ahmad Marzuq says in ‘Aqida al-‘Awamm (Muslim Creed for one and all), we Muslims believe in this bila kayf (without asking how).

The three most important masajid in Islam are the Masjid al-Haram in Makka, Masjid an-Nabawi in Madina and Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. Prayer in these masajid is even more meritorious as we learn from this Hadith.

Hadrat Abu Darda (Rady Allahu ‘Anhu) reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) said: The reward of a Prayer in the Sacred Masjid (in Makka) is worth 100,000 prayers, a Prayer in my Masjid (in Madina) is worth 1,000 prayers, and a Prayer in Masjid al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem) is worth 500 prayers more than in any masjid. (al-Bukhari)

All the Muslims know this well-known saying by heart:

As-Salatu Mi‘rajul Mu’minin
Prayer is the Heavenly Ascension of the believing Muslims.

Each and every Muslim can aspire to this mi‘raj five times every day.

Alhamdu Lillah! All Praise is for Allah.
