SAYYIDATINA KHADIJA

may Allah be pleased with her

by: Hamid Syed and Abid Syed

Sayyidatina Khadijah al-Kubra (may Allah be pleased with her) was the daughter of Khuwaylid and Fatima bint Zaaidah. Muslims owe her a non-payable debt. She lived and died for the sake of Islam. She was the first wife of the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him). She was the first to accept Islam, and to declare that there is only One God Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger. She was also the first person to hear the verses of the Qur’an from the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him). She was the first person to offer Salah (Prayer) behind the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him). She was the first mother of believers. While she was alive, she was the only wife of the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him).

The Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) was twenty-five years old and Sayyidatina Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) was forty when they got married. They spent twenty-five years together, happily married. They had six children, four girls named Zaynab, Ruqayya, Umm Kulthum and Fatima, and two sons named Qasim and Abdullah, who passed away in childhood.

It is said that when the trade caravans of the tribe of Quraysh gathered to embark upon their journey either to Syria or to Yemen, Sayyidatina Khadijah’s caravan equaled the caravans of all other traders put together. In 595 C.E, Sayyidatina Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) needed someone to trade her goods going to Syria. Her relatives, particularly Abu Talib, suggested to her to ask her distant cousin Muhammad ibn Abdullah (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) who by then had already earned the honourable titles of al-Sadiq (the Truthful), and al-Amin (the Trustworthy). It is through this that she got to know Sayyidina Muhammad (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) so well that she was convinced that she had finally found a man whom she would marry, so much so that she initiated the marriage proposal herself.

Sayyidatina Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) earned two titles: Ameerat Quraysh (Princess of Quraysh), and al-Tahira (the Pure one) due to her impeccable personality and virtuous character, not to mention her honourable descent. She used to give food and clothing to the poor, assist her relatives financially and even provide for the marriage of those of her kin who would not otherwise have had the means to marry.

We learn from the following Hadith that she is the best of the world’s women.

Narrated Sayyidina ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) said: The best of the world’s women is Maryam (the Blessed Virgin Mary, peace be upon her) and the best of the world’s women is Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). (al-Bukhari)

According to another Hadith, Allah has built for her a palace in Paradise.

Her name is mentioned in the Friday khutbah.

Others from the Ahl al-Bayt and the Sahaba whose names are usually mentioned in the Friday khutba are:Sayyidina AbuBakr as-Siddiq, Sayyidina Umar al-Faruq, Sayyidina Uthman Dhun-Nurayn, Sayyidina Ali al-Murtada, Sayyidatina Fatima az-Zahra, Sayyidina Imam al-Hassan and Sayyidina Imam al-Husayn, Rady Allahu ‘Anhum

Many religious poems have been composed in her honour.

She passed away on 10th Ramadan and was buried in the graveyard of Jannatul Ma‘lah in Makka.

Muslims love Sayyidatina Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) from the depth of their hearts.
