When we study how the verses of the Holy Qur’ān end with the Name of Allah together with the other Most Beautiful Names of Allah, we find that Allah is Ghafūr, Rahīm (Forgiving, Merciful), occurs in the greatest number of such verses, 51 in total. And since Allah is Forgiving and Merciful, we have been taught in the Holy Qur’ān in two separate verses to supplicate to Him to forgive and show mercy. The du‘ā’ (supplication) is both in the singular and in the plural. The du‘ā’ in the singular is:
Rabbi’ghfir wa’rham wa Anta Khayru’r Rāhimīn
O Lord! Forgive and show mercy, for You are the Best of the merciful. (23:118)
The du‘ā’ in the plural is:
Rabbanā āmannā fa’ghfirlanā wa’rhamnā wa Anta Khayru’r Rāhimīn
Our Lord! We believe, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of the merciful. (23:109)
Imām ‘AbdAllāh bin ‘Alawī al-Haddād (Rady Allahu ‘Anhu) took this du‘ā’ so much to heart that he included verse (23:118) in his Wird-ul-Latīf, sequenced voluntary supplications to Allah recited after Salāt al-Fajr (dawn Prayer).
