2. Allah is Ghafūr(un) Rahīm (Forgiving, Merciful)
Let us first summarize our findings about verses that end with The Name of Allah together with two other Most Beautiful Names of Allah. Let us include the verses that mention the Beautiful Names of Allah with and without the definite article al (The). For example, let us include Al-Ghafūr (The Forgiving) as well as Ghafūr (Forgiving). Let us also include the various ways in which they occur, for example Ghafūr(un) Rahīm (Forgiving, Merciful), and Ghafūr(an) Rahīm(ā) (Forgiving, Merciful), depending on the grammatical context.
We find that Allah is Ghafūr, Rahīm (Forgiving, Merciful) occurs in the greatest number of such verses, 51 in all. Let us then list the frequency of verses with which The Name of Allah occurs together with two other Beautiful Names of Allah at the conclusion of verses. We find that Allah is:
Ghafūr, Rahīm (Forgiving, Merciful) (occurs in 51 verses)
‘Azīz, Hakīm (Mighty, Wise) (25 verses)
‘Alīm, Hakīm (All-Knowing, Wise) (25 verses)

Other Beautiful Names of Allah in similar combinations occur in fewer than 4 verses.
The greatest frequency with which The Name of Allah occurs in any one verse is 7, in verse (73:20). And it is interesting to find that this verse also ends with Allah’s Most Beautiful Names of Ghafūr(un), Rahīm (Forgiving, Merciful).
For the sake of completeness it must be added that the faith of a Muslim is balanced between hope and fear. A Muslim hopes for the Forgiveness and Mercy of Allah in the Hereafter. A Muslim also fears His punishment for bad deeds as Allah is also Shadīd-ul-‘iqāb (Severe in retribution). This comprehensive teaching is captured in verse (5:98) as follows.
Know that Allah is Severe in retribution, and Allah is also Forgiving, Merciful. (5:98)
Then we come to verses that end with The Name of Allah together with one other Most Beautiful Name of Allah. In this case, the Most Beautiful Names of Allah that occur in the greatest number of such verses are:
‘Alīm or ‘Alīm(ā) (All-Knowing) (occurs in 26 verses)
Basīr or Basīr(ā) (All-Seeing) (13 verses)
Khabīr or Khabīr(ā) (All-Aware) (12 verses)
Shahīd or Shahīd(ā) (Witness) (9 verses)
Wakīl or Wakīl(ā) (Ultimate Trustee) (7 verses)Other Beautiful Names of Allah in similar combinations occur in fewer than 7 verses.
Finally, we add the two totals of
- verses that end with The Name of Allah together with two other Most Beautiful Names of Allah, and
- verses that end with The Name of Allah together with one other Most Beautiful Name of Allah.
For example, we add the number of verses that end with The Name of Allah and conclude with ar-Rahīm (or Rahīm or Rahīm(ā)). These are:
Allāh, ar-Rahmān, ar-Rahīm (Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful) (1 verse)
Allāh, al-‘Azīz, ar-Rahīm (Allah, The Mighty, The Merciful) (1 verse)
Allāh, Ghafūr, Rahīm (Allah, Forgiving, Merciful) (51 verses)
Allāh, Tawwāb, Rahīm (Allah, Relenting, Merciful) (5 verses)
Allāh, Ra’ūf, Rahīm (Allah, Most Kind, Merciful) (4 verses)
Allāh, Rahīm(ā) (Allah, Merciful) (1 verse)
We find that the number of verses that end with The Name of Allah and conclude with ar-Rahīm (or Rahīm or Rahīm(ā)) are 63.
In the same way, we get the totals for the other Most Beautiful Names of Allah (arranged here in order of frequency).
Rahīm (Merciful) (63 verses)
‘Alīm (All-Knowing) (56 verses)
Hakīm (Wise) (52 verses)
Basīr (All-Seeing) (22 verses)
Khabīr (All-Aware) (18 verses)
Hamīd (All-Praised) (11 verses)
Halīm (Forbearing) (9 verses)
Shahīd (Witness) (9 verses)
Wakīl (Ultimate Trustee) (7 verses)
Qahhār (Subduer) (6 verses)
‘Azīz (Mighty) (5 verses)
Ghafūr (Forgiving) (5 verses)
Other Most Beautiful Names of Allah in a similar situation occur with a smaller frequency. We draw three broad conclusions. These are:
- The greatest number of verses that end with The Name of Allah together with one other Most Beautiful Name of Allah conclude with ‘Alīm (All-Knowing). These are 26 verses in all.
- The greatest number of verses that end with The Name of Allah together with one or two other Most Beautiful Names of Allah conclude with Rahīm (Merciful). These are 63 verses.
- The greatest number of verses that end with The Name of Allah together with two other Most Beautiful Names of Allah conclude with Ghafūr, Rahīm (Forgiving, Merciful). These are 51 verses.
It must be added that these totals are not carved in stone. Some people might be inclined towards a stricter criterion of counting. For example, they might feel that verse (2:110) should not be counted in the totals given here. Let us recall that verse (2:110) ends as follows:
innAllāh(a) bimā ta‘malūna Basīr (surely, Allah is All-Seeing of what you do).
Some people might feel that though this verse ends with The Name of Allāh and concludes with His Most Beautiful Name of Basīr, it should not be counted in the totals given here because the phrase, bimā ta‘malūna (of what you do) comes in-between the Names Allāh and Basīr. On the other hand, following a less strict criterion, some people might be inclined to include as well verses (24:33) and (31:9) that have not been included here.
Be as it may, the three broad conclusions we just drew above still hold. One of these conclusions is that the greatest number of verses that end with The Name of Allah together with two other Most Beautiful Names of Allah conclude with Ghafūr, Rahīm (Forgiving, Merciful). Let us benefit from the translation of one of these verses.
It may be that Allah will bring about friendship between you and those of them who are (now) your enemies; and Allah is All-Powerful, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (60:7)
This verse in which The Name of Allah is mentioned three times gives us positive good news and glad tidings of friendship, and leads us to a win-win situation!
Al-Hamdu Lillāhi Rabb-il-‘Ālamīn (All Praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds).
