DARS 13: HOPE IN THE MERCY OF ALLAH

In the words of my master, my grandfather, may Allah make people benefit from him, who explained what Allah, The Exalted said (in the Qur’an).

Undoubtedly those who said, “Our Lord is Allah (Rabbunallāh) and afterward are upright, the angels descend upon them, (saying): fear not, and do not grieve. (Al-Qur’an, 41:30)

My grandfather explained, may Allah be pleased with him.

May Allah make us among those who say Rabbunallāh (Our Lord is Allah). What a true saying! And they declare the Lordship (of Allah) with the tongue and in the heart that indeed none is to be worshipped but Allah. What a person desires in this world the most is this hospitable reception (as a guest of Allah). And what better thing to return to than this hospitable reception and this good news? He goes about in this world and exerts himself but his real goal is the Hereafter. And before he leaves (this world), he knows what comes next for everything. A believer who says: Allah is my Lord, knows the Lordship of Allah and worships Him. Then he stands steadfast on the sacred Muslim law and on the beautiful spiritual path. Our Lord does not abandon him.

We do not waste the reward of one whose work is good. (18:30)

Angels descend upon him. Some (scholars) have said: Indeed, Allah sends angels to his believing servant when he is sick and at the time of his death and they give him the good news of meeting The Generous Lord, and (they) show him his good deeds and they give him the greeting of peace from Allah, and the good news:

Fear not. (41:30)

(Fear not) about the future or about the questioning by the two angels (in the grave).

And do not grieve. (41:30)

(Do not grieve) about what has passed. If you have left behind children, Allah will protect them and He will set right (their affairs). Allah protects the doers of good.

And receive good news of the Paradise which you were promised. (41:30)

This is the time when he is in the pangs of death and he receives this beautiful good news. This is the bliss and it is the beautiful end (to his life). And the good news is received from above, before the meeting (with Allah in the Hereafter) and before leaving this world. Then the angels say:

We are your friends in the life of this world. (41:31)

We (the angels) protect you, we turn away the bad things from you, and inspire you and we keep you safe. And in the Hereafter, we will protect you in the same way.

Then my master recited (two couplets), may Allah make people benefit from him.

He gives togetherness its due right
and it is a duty to be on the best of manners with Him.

Know that you are truly His slave
in all situations and He is The Lord

If your father is a rich businessman, you might return to him fearing poverty, fearing a need, fearing weakness. Your father gives you. And if you rely on your Lord and take Him as your Ultimate Trustee, anything that opposes you will return to you (reconciled).

Lord of the east and the west (73:9), with His Might and His Power.

There is no god but He. (73:9)

There is none to challenge Him.

So take Him as Ultimate Trustee. (73:9)

Rely upon Him in your matters, and feel at ease with His Promise.

Imam Shafi‘ī said:

And when my heart becomes hard and my way becomes narrow
I put my hope in the road that leads to Your door-step

My sins become huge but when I compare them
with Your forgiveness, my Lord, Your forgiveness is greater

He says: If my sins become many and the road is blocked for me, I make the hope in Allah my way. If I do not have any sincere good deeds and my heart is hardened, I put my hope in the path to Allah. And if my sins are many, I find that the forgiveness of my Lord is greater than my sins.

In this way, the believer returns to hope in his Lord, and relies on his Lord, The Glorified and The Exalted. And hope does not come except to one who loves Him and calls upon Him, so He hopes in the Mercy of his Lord and fears His punishment (for sins), or as he said.
