Isra’ and Mi‘raj was with body and soul

When Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) returned back to Makka from Mi‘raj and he told the people about his miraculous journey, the non-believers mocked at him as we learn from the following Hadith.

Hadrat Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (Rady Allahu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) said: When the Quraysh disbelieved me (concerning the night journey), I stood up in Al-Hijr (the unroofed portion of the Ka‘ba) and Allah displayed Bayt al-Maqdis before me, and I started to inform them about its signs while looking at it. (al-Bukhari)

The non-believers rejected the reality of the Prophet’s miraculous night journey. However, a very large majority of his Companions (Rady Allahu ‘Anhum) and Muslim scholars (‘ulama) are agreed that the Prophet’s Isra’ and Mi‘raj took place with both body and soul. They say that it was not just a dream as some people speculate because if it was merely a dream, the non-believers would not have objected to it, as nobody objects to anyone’s claim of seeing any number of wonderful things in a dream. Hence, it was not a dream but a reality, and therefore a miracle that was reported as a miracle in both Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and in many other books of Hadith.

It is well-known in sufi circles that the Awliya Allah (Friends of Allah, sufi saints) perform miracles. The miracles of sufi saints are called karaamaat while the miracles of the Prophets are called mu‘jizaat. Mu‘jizaat and karaamaat are not at the same level. A well-known karaama (miracle) of sufi saints is that Allah folds up the earth for them so that bodily, they might be in London, for example, but their ruh (spirit) flies to the Ka‘ba in Makka where they perform their Salah (Prayer). The mu‘jiza of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) was very special. He travelled with both body and soul from the sacred Masjid in Makka to the blessed Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, and from there all the way to Jannatul Ma’wa (the Paradise of Abode) and Hadratillah (Presence of Allah). His journey was both physical and spiritual.

Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (Rady Allahu ‘Anhu) spontaneously believed in this miracle of the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam). Hence, he earned the title of as-Siddiq (the Truthful).
