MANBA‘ AL-IMDĀD: A FOUNTAIN OF HELP
A Compendium of the talks of:
AL-HABĪB AHMAD MASH-HŪR BIN TĀHĀ AL-HADDĀD
Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu
Compiled by his grandson:
As-Sayyid Muhammad bin Mustafā Bū Numay
Rahmatullāhi ‘alayh
In the words of my master, my grandfather, may Allah make people benefit from him when he explained some of the meanings of Surah an-Naas, and (especially) about the protection and fortification against shaytan (the devil), the rejected one.
He said, may Allah be pleased with him.
The Lordship of Allah is a great Attribute. When you seek protection with the Lord of mankind Who sustains you, it is like seeking protection with your father who is compassionate to you and does not let the enemy touch you.
And this is your Lord (Allah) Who sustains you and protects you, so you seek protection with Him and you say:
Say! I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind. (114:1)
And on top of that:
The King of mankind. (114:2)
Then,
The God of mankind. (114:3)
Lordship, Sovereignty and Divine Power. He (Allah) controls with His Power the beginning and the end, life and death, the raising of positions and honour.
And worship means that only Allah is to be worshipped, He is the sought after, and the ultimate is the Presence (of Allah), and you entrust your guidance to Him. There is no god but He, none else is to be worshipped and none else is sought after. He has no partner, no challenger.
So Allah has commanded us to seek protection against shaytan, the rejected one, and against his temptation with these three Attributive Names (of Allah) because he (shaytan) has been cut off, accursed and expelled. He is an enemy so we should take him for what he is.
Truly, shaytan is an enemy to you, so take him for an enemy. (36:60)
And his enmity is open. He does not come to us except in the Prayer and in spare time and in places of the presence (of body, mind and soul), and in places of worship, until he changes (spoils) our Prayer, and spoils our presence (of mind in Prayer), until he busies us (in things) away from the remembrance of Allah and away from the delight of conversation (with Allah in Prayer and supplication), and away from seeking the nearness of Allah. And (in this way) all our worship is put in doubt.
But Allah has taught us a great (way of) protection. And it is protection with three Attributive Names (of Allah). And these are His Attributes of Lordship, Kingship and Divinity.
And what is special about these three Names?
Well, as for the Lordship of Allah: It is an Attribute from the attribute of refinement, and compassion, and being kind and gentle.
So we seek the protection of Allah Who is Merciful from the temptation of shaytan, the rejected one. And we seek protection in His Kingship and Domination.
And as for His Divinity: He is the only One to be worshipped, you return to no one else but Him, or seek support except from Him. So as for His Divinity: man enters into a sea from seas of extinction(of created beings), and into a sea from the seas of His (Allah’s) Presence, and he is lost to all his attributes. What is intended from this is (protection)
From the evil of the sneaking whisperer. (114:4)
He (shaytan) is called a sneak because he withdraws and disappears when you remember Allah, and you gain in strength with (the remembrance of) Allah. So with the remembrance (of Allah) he flees and withdraws but he remains hidden, and when there is some little heedlessness, he returns. If he is permanently with you, you will be permanently lost with shaytan but he comes and (then) hides. So when he sees that you are heedless, he comes and when he sees you remembering Allah, he is silent and hides,
who whispers (sowing doubt) into the breasts of mankind. (114:5)
The place he enters is their breasts, that is their hearts and their minds. Allah has given him power to run in the body of man like blood. So mankind seeks protection and fortification against him. So if you see him or if he appears in front of you, take a knife and stab him. But he enters into you and sits.
But Allah has taught you a great (way of) protection so use this protection (against shaytan who is)
From among the jinn and mankind. (114:6)
Sowers of doubt are of two kinds. They are from the jinn and they are from mankind. As Allah says in another verse (in the Qur’an):
… devils from among mankind and jinn, some of them inspiring others with (falsely) adorned speech in order to deceive, and had your Lord wished, they would not have done so… (6:112)
So you seek protection even against the devils among men because if the devils among men are present in a gathering of goodness, they are heavy-handed against them and they talk in another way. They turn away people from the presence (of mind and soul in worship), and from thinking about the meaning of Hadith, and other things.
So Allah teaches us these three Names and Magnificent Attributes, so we say: O Lord of mankind, O King of mankind, O God of mankind, keep away from us and turn away the evil of the sneaking whisperer (shaytan). So if someone supplicates with these three supplications and he is in prostration (before Allah), or in another position, shaytan goes far away because you are seeking help from Allah, the Glorified and the Exalted, through His Lordship, and through His Mercy and Compassion.
And (as for His) Kingship, (it) is with (His) Domination and Dominion, and worshipping Him with reverential awe.
So, may Allah strengthen us against shaytan and turn him away from us, O Lord of the worlds!
