DARS 33: THE BLESSING IN THE FOOD

In the words of my master, my grandfather, may Allah spread his benefit, when he explained the Hadith about licking the fingers (after eating) and the blessing in the food. He explained, may Allah be pleased with him.

There is blessing in the food and the blessing is that with it you obtain growth and movement and strength for obedience (of Allah). And all of the food in any situation (even the left-over and that which is dropped) is with blessing. So when a person eats the food and something small remains from it, he does not leave the little but eats it because there is blessing in eating what remains. And when he finishes eating and something remains on his fingers, he licks it lightly without opening his mouth fully. Maybe, there is blessing in it. And the blessing is a meaningful matter which Allah, the Glorified and the Exalted, has kept in the food in His Wisdom.

So if a morsel or a broken piece of bread falls down, do not leave it. Whoever takes it up, there is blessing in it which is that there is growth and nourishment. Allah has favoured him with it so he raises it up and eats it. So if something falls on the floor, he removes it so he does not become luxuriant or proud like others who are proud and luxuriant. If it happens that it is soiled or dirty and might harm him, he should put it aside or leave it for animals like a cat or other (animals).

And he should not invite shaytaan, the evil, as he is such that he sees us whereas we cannot see him. He associates with us in everything. And shaytaan associates with us especially in eating when a person does not recite Bismillah (in the name of Allah). But when Bismillah is recited, he (shaytaan) is prohibited. So if the recitation of Bismillah is forgotten when beginning to eat and remembered in the middle, then recite: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa fi akhirihi (in the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end). Then shaytaan will throw up what he ate from it.
